What is the difference between the Ultimaker Original and Ultimaker 2?
The Ultimaker Original is the ultimate open source 3D printer, that is available as a kit. It enables you to modify, develop and upgrade your 3D printer while being able to print at a very high quality. If these aspects are important to you, the Ultimaker Original will be the perfect 3D printer for you.
The Ultimaker 2 is a user-friendly and reliable 3D printer that come fully assembled and ready to use. The Ultimaker 2 enables consumers to print in high quality without any technical knowledge. Furthermore, the Ultimaker 2 will become open source, through which it is a perfect 3D printer for experts as well.
Is software included when I buy an Ultimaker?
Yes. Our open source software Cura is free to download, please visit our software page.
What software can I use to create 3D models?
For 3D modeling you can basically use any program you want, as long as you are able to save or export the model as a file format that will be accepted by our software Cura. The file formats that are supported by Cura are STL, OBJ, DAE and AMF.
How long does it take to print something in 3D?
The time it takes to make a 3D print with the Ultimaker depends on the size of the model and the settings that you use for printing. A small object with low quality settings can already be printed in less than 5 minutes. But when you want to print a big object in high quality it could also take several hours.
I’m interested in buying an Ultimaker Original. Which of the accessories and upgrades are included and which are recommended to add?
When you buy the Ultimaker Original it will contain all the latest upgrades (Extruder Drive upgrade, Hot End upgrade and Knurled drive bolt kit).
A highly recommended accessory for the Ultimaker Original Kit is the UltiController. It allows you to use your Ultimaker stand-alone, which gives a more pleasant experience. Also, it allows you to live tune your print and enables a more stable data transfer. The Ultimaker Original Assembled already contains the UltiController, as all the other available upgrades.
If you are interested in printing with 2 colors you could purchase the Dual Extrusion pack. However, this is still experimental and might require some tweaking for good results. Therefore it is recommended for more experienced Ultimaker users.
Will a heated bed also available for the Ultimaker Original?
Yes, we are currently developing a heated bed upgrade for the Ultimaker Original. We expect this to become available in the second quartile of 2014.
Will there also be a dual extrusion option for the Ultimaker 2?
Yes, we plan to release this in the second quartile of 2014.
