3D Printing in Medicine: Facial Reconstruction Surgery

3D Printing in Medicine: Facial Reconstruction Surgery
Doctors at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Ward of Clinical University Hospital in Olsztyn, Poland, work with full-scale models of patients’ skulls 3D printed on the Zortrax M200 Plus with Z-ABS filament. Based on CT scans, those models help in shaping personalized implants prior to surgery. Only in the 2015-2017 period, the ward admitted approximately 300 patients. 55% of them suffered from orbital traumas and over 80% of those cases required orbital floor reconstruction. 3D printing can make their treatment more effective and safer.

How to reduce shrinkage by 3D printing with Zortrax HEPA Cover

Zortrax HEPA Cover is a filtering device for Zortrax M200 and Zortrax M200 Plus 3D printers.  With fan speed adjustments you can stabilize the temperature inside the printing chamber to avoid warping, cracking, and shrinkage.

Advantages of using Zortrax HEPA Cover (in regards to reduce shrinkage) are as follows:

  • equalization of the temperature inside the 3D printing chamber;
  • stability of the temperature (with fan turned off or set to minimal or medium);
  • acceleration of the chamber heating (with fan turned off or set to minimal);
  • longer cooling process allowing for a proper compensation of tensions (with fan turned off or set to minimal)
